VHS videotape was designed to be a consumer
format used mostly for playback and recording on home VCRs.
It's popularity over other tape formats was primarily due to
recording/playback time.

Super VHS (S-VHS)
Dimensions
(mm): 187 x 103 x 25.5
Horizontal resolution: 400 lines.
S-VHS and VHS video cassettes are the same size
and have similar appearance.
S-VHS is an improvement on video and audio
qualities of the VHS format. Many S-VHS decks will record
and play back regular VHS tapes, however S-VHS tapes will
not play back on VHS decks.
We can transfer
PAL
and
NTSC tapes. |

VHS-C
Dimensions (mm): 92 x 59 x 22.25
Horizontal resolution: 240 lines.
VHS-C (C for compact) is housed in a smaller shell than VHS.
A VHS sized adaptor is required to playback VHS-C videotapes
in a standard VCR deck, or a VHS-C camcorder is needed to
view VHS-C tapes. Similar to VHS, there is also an
S-VHS-C variant.
We can transfer
PAL
and
NTSC VHS-C and S-VHS-C tapes.

Video8, 8mm, Hi8 an Digital8
Dimensions (mm): 93.5 x 62 x 14.25
8mm (or Video8) is a consumer format
introduced for palm-sized camcorders. An 8mm camera or deck
is needed to view the tapes.
Horizontal resolution: 260 lines.
Hi-8 is an improvement on the 8mm format.
Horizontal resolution: 400 lines.
Digital 8 (or D8) Digital video is recorded on Hi-8
tapes. Horizontal resolution: up to 500 lines.
We can transfer
PAL
and
NTSC
tapes from
all 8mm formats. |

Mini-DV
Dimensions (mm):
65 x 47.5 x 11
Horizontal resolution: up to 500 lines.
Mini-DV captures video
and audio on high-density cassette tapes. This format is
very popular, as it delivers sound and video that is
decidedly sharp and high quality.
We can transfer
PAL
and
NTSC
tapes in both
mini and full sized (see DVCAM) tape formats.

DVCAM
Dimensions
(mm): 124 x 78 x 14.25
Horizontal resolution: up to 500 lines.
DVCAM runs faster than DV, allowing for slightly shorter
recording times. DVCAM is primarily a professional format,
however both DVCAM and Mini-DV tapes may store either
DV or DVCAM formats.
We can transfer
PAL
and
NTSC
tapes in both
mini (see Mini-DV) and full sized tape formats.
